How does a biometric system recognize or identify a person?

Biometrics is a process of establishing a person’s identity based on his/her chemical, behavioral or physical attributes. Such systems work with already enrolled and stored biometric data of an individual that is generated by a special algorithm using suitable characteristics to create a biometric template. The system can then be used to identify the person with the biometric data stored in the system.

What are the different biometric modalities that can be used for access control solutions?

A biometric system identifies users with their physical or behavioral characteristics. Biometric data is collected with a capture device, it’s then processed and characteristic biometric reference data is stored in a database or ideally in a portable data carrier, such as a smart card. This process is called enrolment. When the user wants to access the system, he or she presents their biometric trait again. Biometric probe data is then generated and compared with the previously recorded reference data. Access is granted depending on the similarity determined by a dedicated algorithm and the security policy of the application. 

There are various biometric modalities including fingerprint, face, iris, hand geometry, veins, voice patterns, or DNA data. These modalities have different advantages and drawbacks to certain characteristics including uniqueness, permanence, and collectability. Which modality is best suitable for a specific application scenario depends on how these individual characteristics are weighed.

A Biometric System-on-Card (BSoC) performs data capture, processing, storage, and comparison of biometric data within a smart card. Although other modalities may be possible for this system architecture solution, the majority of BSoC is currently focusing on fingerprint recognition.
